The Incomplete Soul.

He waited for his thoughts to settle, as he sat down to write an article for his newspaper daily.
It was well past midnight, and also his ‘writing time.’ Solitude was his best friend, and loneliness, his estranged companion. He allowed his thoughts to wander away, despite knowing what their destination would be. They always settled on the same person, no matter how much he tried to mislead them.

It had been 3 years since that fateful day.
“I’m nervous, Neil. What if your family doesn’t like me?”
“You’re to get married to me, not my family. This meeting is just a formality.” He replied calmly.
“Could you just try to divert my mind instead of offering me your expert advice?”
“Well, okay. They’re going to like you, alright? I’m sure.”
“But..” she was interrupted by him even before she could complete her sentence.
“We’ve reached. Come on now!” he said excitedly.
He opened the car door for her, as he always did, and held out his hand to her.  She clutched his hand tight, and walked a step behind him, just so that he couldn’t see how she was sweating.
To her relief, everything went exceptionally well, and they were to get married in a week’s time.
*3 MONTHS LATER*
“I’ll be back soon, alright? Take care of yourself, and don’t stay up late and….”
“Relax Seher, you’re going to be back in a week. You don’t have to worry so much. I’ll be perfectly fine.”
“Alright. I love you. Bye.”
“I love you too. Call me when you land, okay?”
“Okay.”
She collected her boarding pass, and waited in the lounge. Her flight was scheduled to leave in a while.
Just then, his name flashed on her mobile, and she picked it up immediately.
“See, you couldn’t even stay an hour without Me.”, She said coyly.
“Oh c’mon, don’t be silly.” He replied.
She could almost feel the sheepish smile playing on his lips.
“I just wanted to make sure you’re okay.” He replied lowly.
“Aww, look whose worrying now? I’m going to be okay. Don’t worry love.” She reassured him.
There was silence. None of them spoke a word.
“Time to go, I’ll call you as soon as possible, okay?” he said, breaking the silence.
“Okay, take care.”
“You too. I love you.”
“I love you too.”
*Next day morning*
He switched on the television with his favourite black coffee in hand, and tuned into the news channel.
“The Paramount Airways flight, which took off from Hyderabad yesterday midnight, has reportedly faced a fatal accident on its course. All of its passengers have been presumed dead. “ Said the news reporter.
His heart broke into a million pieces; his soul got ripped into uncountable fragments. His world turned upside down, and he cursed fate for cheating him in such a brutal way.
Her last words kept ringing in his ears all day, and her unearthly presence seemed to evade him continuously.
Nothing was ever going to be the same.

It had taken him months to get back on talking terms with people. Even now, the emotional pain that kept stabbing him each moment was inexpressible. He was broken beyond repair.
Now he lived, not for himself, but to punish her for leaving him halfway through their journey.
He lived so that he could let the illusion called life, tangle him in its countless chains, and so that he could break through all those chains, and so that he could defeat life in its own ring.
